Art Club!

Last week the art club brainstormed some concepts and ideas for our first project. We will work together as a group to build a life size scarecrow out of recyclable materials. This scarecrow will be entered into the Piedmont Interstate Fair! Fingers crossed, because I know our group is talented and will create something AMAZING!

Last week 6 groups wrote concepts for what we will create. Several faculty and staff members helped me decide for art club to create a "mother nature" themed scarecrow. We chose this because the theme for the fair this year is "We've Got Another Thing Growing." We thought the mother nature concept could go in many different directions using that theme!

Club members began making details and building the scarecrow today! Here is what we have so far!

Art Club starts tomorrow!!! At the moment we are over total with 25 signed up, no more students are permitted to sign up if they have not already done so! A permission form is required to stay! We will meet every Thursday until 3:30. Students need to be picked up on Boyd Street at 3:30! An information sheet with dates and projects will be given to students who come tomorrow. Please email me at skwarner@spart7.org with any questions or concerns.

"Beautiful Oops"

Kindergarten is working on learning about the different lines. The covered their paper with "muscle color" crayon lines, then watched the "magic" when we painted watercolor lines on top!

1st grade reviewed how lines are used to create shapes (specifically geometric shapes). We covered our paper with bright shapes then, OOPS! We spilled ink on our papers and blew it around to create organic shapes.

2nd grade began by making an oops with colored ink and using a straw to blow it around into a "splat." We then used our imaginations to turn our splats into little monsters!

3rd grade looked at different landscapes and first painted a background. Once that was dry we OOPS! spilled ink onto our paper and used straws and paint brushes to create trees.

4th grade is studying Jackson Pollock and his drip painting. We cannot create such large paintings, so we are using colored ink to drip the ink on our papers. We then picked up our papers and tilted them back and fourth to let the ink drip around. We also used straws to blow the ink into funky shapes. The next step we have just started to work on is filling the negative space with black ink for contrast.

5th grade used warm colors (red, yellow, orange, pink, ect.) for paint a background. Once it was dry, we OOPS! spilled ink onto our paper and used straws and paint brushes to create trees.

Making Something Beautiful Out of Our "Mistakes"

September 4th- 14th, students in every grade will be learning to make something beautiful from their "mistakes." Every class is beginning by reading Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg. (you can check it out here! www.beautifuloops.com)

Too many times do they "mess up" and wish to start over. I see such great potential in their work, even when they are not 100% happy with it. I always tell them to keep working, because you never know how it may turn out through the processes. I give them the example of a painting I did in college. I had been working on this painting (the bright orange abstract below) for about a week now. I had put over 40 hours into this painting and BAM! My professor slammed yellow paint all over my painting and simply said "fix it." I did fix it and I like it better because of it. I want all my students to see such potential in an "oops."

Here is a few snap shots of whats going on in the art room this week, but more to come tomorrow!!

Art Room Tour

Thank you to the parents who are visiting my site! I know it is hard for you to make it down to our little dungeon here at PSS. Here is a virtual tour of the art hall (and it's new makeover!)

tables and supply shelves

I put this by the door so the students can read it as they leave. So many students feel as though they can add and add and add to their projects. I like to remind them that I always feel like I can add and/or change things to my work, but sometimes you just have to move on to something new and come back later.

where you can always find your student's work. Each student will be making a portfolio that will be stored in their class's slot

how to draw books and inspirational pictures.. because sometimes we just need a little help getting that imagination going!

each class has a paint palette that they try to "fill up" to get a little surprise

Art room #2... We have a traveling art teacher from Huston Elementary who is with us on Fridays. It is always nice to have another art person in the building!
